The Optical Compute Interconnect (OCI) Multi-Source Agreement group was announced in March 2026, led by founding members AMD, Broadcom, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and OpenAI. Its mandate is an open, multi-vendor physical-layer specification for optical scale-up links — the connections inside and between AI racks that copper can no longer serve at required speed and reach.

Optical links address the interconnect leg of that three-way constraint directly.
Component suppliers including Broadcom and Ayar Labs have positioned optical technology across both layers, treating the rack — not just the data center row — as the boundary where copper gives way to light.
